Jiro Restaurant: AYCE Lunch

Jiro is a AYCE (all you can eat) Japanese restaurant serving lunch and dinner buffet on East Broadway (close to Kingsway intersection). We decided to try this AYCE restaurant because of its good reviews and their consistency to provide good tasting food. Jiro is a Japanese restaurant that specializes in AYCE and they are open for lunch until 5pm - rare for restaurants!

I love that our food came fast and warm but somehow a fly had managed to fly onto one of our scallop cones. The food was fresh and we all enjoyed it. It was definitely worth its value for the selection and also because none of our orders were ever cut. My only complaint would be the sashimi limit of two per person and maybe that it took a while for us to get the attention of a waitress to take our order. Other than that, the food was awesome and we will definitely be back soon!

who could resist chocolate-y goodness in a cake?

This weekend, not only did my family celebrate Father's Day but also my brother's birthday. Just like every year, we ordered a chocolate mousse cake. If you are a fan of chocolate and fruits (doesn't this cake look for fruit cake than chocolate mousse?!) then this is the perfect dessert for you. I have baked cupcakes and many different desserts but have never found a good recipe for a moist chocolate-y cake such as this one. Cakes (chocolate mousse, black forest, or even fruitcakes) are great for those family celebrations and a birthday party, you can even ask for a customized picture on your cake. I remember one year my brother was obsessed with pokémon and we got a cake with a huge edible Pikachu right next to his name.

Most of the time, when you order a cake ahead of time/special order you can get 10% off - you just have to ask for it.

East Fusion Food: Seafood Fiesta

Tucked in International Village located in Chinatown is East Fusion Food, a café serving Asian fusioned dishes from $2 - $11 CDN. I've known this eatery from the day it opened its doors but haven't gotten a chance to try it but now. I have always passed by this food-court style café and my sister had gradually began to notice over time how the size of their bowls have decreased - from the economic downturn, I suppose.

We were seated promptly, which was great, but we were treated differently. Perhaps it was because it was lunch hour and we looked young because we got glass cups instead of the china ones everyone else were using and we were seating in the back and hidden away. It took a waitress about ten minutes to finally glance toward our way and take our order. Oddly enough, the lady who sat beside us asked me if I was from Singapore (I have never been asked that, ever) and I assumed it was a decoy after making herself sound weird in front of a very confused Chinese waitress. My sister and I wanted to try something new hence we chose the following two seafood dishes...

Deep fried oysters - oysters that most likely prepackaged in a bucket (found at T&T) which were rolled in flour and then deep fried in oil.

Seafood congee - the congee was average but the amount of seafood put into it made it worth its value and especially good after the deep fried oysters.

If it wasn't for the terrible service, I would have loved this new gem of Chinatown - one of the most popular eateries among the young to the elderly (Hons used to be the "it" place but has lost its popularity due to lack of quality in its dishes and high in MSG). East Fusion Food's dishes also contains quite a fair bit of MSG but their selection of appetizers and specialty dishes stand out above Honolulu or any other café around. Another thing to note, I recommend you have cash at hand when eating at East Fusion because I tried to pay by debit and received unpleasant looks from the manager (more than once too - when I asked if I could pay by debit and when I told him how much I was paying). I suppose it is probably because they are charged by per use and I was only tipping 10% (even though we had terrible service)! Otherwise, East Fusion is a great place for a light meal before or after shopping in Gastown - I recommend LYNNsteven (woman's clothing and accessories) and Wink Beauty (for beauty products).

Vancouver's First Cupcake Challenge

On Father's Day or Sunday June 20th 2010, Vancouver's First Cupcake Challenge took place in Yaletown, specifically Roundhouse Community Centre. Many events were also taking place there around the same time but due to some things that came up, the GJA Team was not able to make the event, take pictures and review this crucial event but we have settled for the second best option. If you, like us, were not able to make the event, we still have a reliable source with pictures and written content detailing how the event took place, including one of my personal favourite website - Vancouver Is Awesome. Click here to be redirected and read about the event.

Again, we hope we can make the next major Vancouver food event and be there to take pictures and review Vancouver's finest.

Cheers,

GJA
